2021 Subaru Ascent vs. 2021 Toyota Highlander

  • The new 2021 Subaru Ascent has a lower starting price than the 2021 Toyota Highlander. The new Ascent starts at just under $33,000 while the new Toyota Highlander starts at around $34,000, allowing you to upgrade to a higher Ascent trim level for a comparable price to the base Highlander or enjoy the savings.
  • To help you take on winter roads around Sparta or give you greater freedom to take on off-road terrain, every new 2021 Subaru Ascent model comes equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, allowing you to enjoy the utmost traction and control at all times. The Toyota Highlander comes equipped with standard front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive equipped models will cost extra.
  • The new Toyota Highlander offers more standard horsepower than the Subaru Ascent does. However, the new Ascent delivers more standard torque than the Highlander does, offering 277 pounds-feet compared to 263 pounds-feet in the Highlander.
  • The new 2021 Subaru Ascent makes it easier to see the road ahead and avoid obstacles thanks to 8.7-inches of ground clearance on every model. The Toyota Highlander falls slightly short with 8-inches of ground clearance.
  • The new Subaru Ascent allows you to pack in more cargo than the Highlander does, offering 17.6 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row, compared to 16 cubic feet from the Highlander. The Ascent also extends to up to 86.5 cubic feet of maximum storage space, compared to 84.3 cubic feet of maximum storage space in the Highlander.
  • Every new Subaru Ascent model comes with a power liftgate. The Highlander also offers a power liftgate, but it doesn't come standard.
  • Both the Ascent and Highlander are known for their suite of standard driver assist features. However, for 2021, the Ascent extends its standard safety offerings with the Eyesight Driver Assist Technology system that now features blind-spot monitoring, reverse automatic braking, rear cross-traffic assist and a front-view monitor, along with pre-collision braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and more. The Highlander offers many of the same features, but doesn't come with standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, or a front-view monitor standard.
